What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a martial art indigenous to the Thai people of south east Asia. Although now primarily known for being one of the most effective striking styles and toughest ring sports in the world, Muay Thai originally developed from the battlefield weapon art of Krabi Krabong, which employed a number of different weapons including double swords. It then evolved into Muay Boran (ancient boxing) which made use of rope binds for the hands rather than gloves, and permitted strikes such as headbutts and gouges. During the 1930’s as a means of embracing western culture, Thai boxers began to make use of gloves similar to those used in Western boxing matches and adopting the rounds system. This was when Muay Thai in it’s modern form started to emerge. Since that time it has gained popularity both in and outside of it’s homeland through it’s effectiveness. Not only in it’s original format but also in various competitive sports against other styles such as K1 and MMA. Muay Thai shows consistent results as a striking system against other styles. Known as the science of 8 limbs, Thai boxing makes use of the hands, the feet, the elbows and the knees. As well as an effective martial art for the ring, it provides all of the tools for self defence and gives practitioners a high level of confidence, fitness and flexibility. Muay Thai is also one of the highest calorie burning martial arts that you can take part in, great for weight loss along with boosting your self esteem and teaching you how to defend yourself.
